Guelph Renewable Energy Co-operative

Welcome to Guelph Renewable Energy Co-operative!

Guelph Renewable Energy Co-operative Inc. empowers citizens to take ownership over renewable energy generation through participation in solar installation projects.

Please explore our site to learn about the organization, the projects that we are working on and how you can participate in decreasing our community’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources!

You can invest in solar power in Guelph-Wellington. Guelph Renewable Energy is a Guelph-Wellington solar co-op. We are working hard to make it easy for local investors to earn an impressive return while doing something good for the planet. We are developing commercial-scale solar energy installations so that Guelph-Wellington residents can invest in them.

As Guelph Renewable Energy Co-op members we are passionate about solar power, about reducing our eco-footprint and about creating opportunities for local ownership of renewable energy.

3 – Please click on this survey – we need critical information from our members
Please respond to this survey through this link:
Deadline: 5:00pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2015
This will only take a couple minutes. Please use this survey to tell us about your interest in investing in our new solar power projects. We need to hear from you in the next few days. Our co-op has more members than the number of available investment bonds, so we are conducting this poll to gauge interest. If the number of interested co-op members exceeds availability, a lottery system will be used.
Preliminary details on the investment are below (more to follow at the AGM). A full business plan will be posted online before the AGM. Please read the overview below and respond to the questions in Survey Monkey (link below) by 5:00pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2015.
Preliminary Investment summary:
Guelph Solar Community Co-operative (operating as Guelph Renewable Energy Co-op) is about to begin construction of two rooftop solar projects in Guelph, located at:
  • 2 Airpark Place (110 kWp)
  • 218 Silvercreek Parkway N (300 kWp)

A total of $165,000 in co-op equity is required for these projects. Members of the co-operative will have the opportunity to buy one of 33 community bonds (@ $5,000 each) to support these projects.

Bonds will have a 20-year term. 5% of principal will be paid back annually each year starting at the end of year one.
The bonds will pay the following interest on the outstanding principal balance:
Years 1 through 5
Years 6 through 10
Years 11 through 15
Years 16 through 20
The average return on outstanding principal is 7.26%
Bonds can be transferred after 5 years provided replacement member equity is available (the stepped interest rate is expected to facilitate future bond transfers).

Deadline: 5:00pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2015

4 – Our Co-op name is changing
We are in the midst of changing our name to the Guelph Renewable Energy Co-operative (GRECo) to avoid confusion with other organizations. We will be “operating as” GRECo / Guelph Renewable Energy Co-operative until ratification of the name change at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). In future communications we will be operating as GRECo.

On December 14th the Ontario Power Authority reopened the window to "small" scale solar Feed In Tariff applications - projects between 10 and 500 kilowatts. The announcement stated that the window would only be open until January 18th, a much briefer window than most in the solar community anticipated. We need to sign up 50 members who are landowners in both Guelph and Wellington County to be prioritized for project consideration. Membership is only $5, so please consider joining!

Help Bring a Solar Co-operative to
Guelph and Wellington County

For $5 you can help launch Guelph and Area’s first solar community co-op

A community solar co-op lets us pool our money to build large solar projects that can help the environment, the economy, and our local communities.

Your $5 annual membership fee makes you part of our first landmark projects – the rooftop of Barzotti Kitchens in Guelph, or in partnership with the Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Wellington County, for solar projects that:

  • reduce green house gas emissions.
  • use the sun to generate electricity.
  • produce energy where it's used - as opposed to hundreds of kilometers away.
  • provides you the opportunity to invest in this project at an initial and growing rate of return starting at 5%.
  • makes money for you, other members, and for the Ignatius Jesuit Centre.
  • is RRSP eligible
  • produce solar electricity equivalent to the consumption needs of roughly 50 households every year.

Under the rules of the Provincial Feed In Tariff program, we require a minimum of 50 local property owners separately in Guelph and Wellington County to join the co-op before January 18, 2013. By having these 50 initial members in each area, we can create the organization that will bring this dream to life.

Come to one of our sign up sessions:

  • Wed. 9th and Thurs. 10th at Planet Bean 6-8PM (downtown and south end locations) and Sat. 12th at the Guelph Farmers’ Market.
  • On Mon. 13th and Tues 14th we will be in locations yet to be determined (either a library or coffee shop) in Rockwood, Fergus, Erin, and/or Arthur. On the 16th we will be on hand to sign up memberships at the Erin Eco-Film fest at the Erin Legion.

Your $5 can go a long way towards our green energy future.

Join us and help bring community solar to Guelph/Wellington!

Please note: Your membership gives you the opportunity to invest in the project once we get a contract from the OPA (Ontario Power Authority) but does not obligate you to do so. This is a limited time offer as we will be resuming our standard $100 lifetime membership fee following the FIT eligibility window.

Much has happened over the past 2 years, and we are pleased to be back at the point where we are engaging our community to participate and invest in one of several exciting community solar development opportunities. We are currently working with several organizations to explore the feasibility of community owned solar on free roof space, including Ignatius Jesuit Centre, St. Joseph's Health Centre, and the Wellington Catholic District School Board.
